TULAMBEN
The USAT Liberty Shipwreck in Tulamben is an unforgettable Bali’s most popular dive site.
The chance to explore a World War II shipwreck makes it an unmissable part of your Bali scuba vacation.
THE USAT LIBERTY SHIPWRECK HISTORY
The USAT Liberty was built in 1918 as a cargo ship and saw service in WWI. At the start of WWII it was fitted with guns and used for military transport as the USAT Liberty. In 1942 the Liberty was hit by a Japanese torpedo as it passed by the nearby island of Lombok.
An attempt was made to tow the Liberty to North Bali for repairs. In 1963 an eruption of the nearby. Agung volcano pushed the ship into the sea where it remains to this day. This strange story explains why the shipwreck is known as one of the world’s most convenient shipwreck dives.
It lies on a sandy slope just 30 metres from the beach.
DIVE SITES AROUND TULAMBEN
Located between the Liberty Wreck and Drop-Off dive sites, the Coral Garden is a shallow reef abounding
with colorful corals and rare marine life. The Coral Garden is rich in macro life, including hard to find
species such as ghost pipefish, leaf scorpion fish, and harlequin and mantis shrimps. It is also home to
plenty of striking nudibranches – during night dives keep an eye out for the alluring Spanish dancer.
The Coral Garden is an excellent place to spot bright blue and yellow ribbon eels. You may also see
black and white tip reef sharks that often prowl the area.
This dive site is a superb spot with none to moderate current. Because of it’s shallow depth,
the Coral Garden is an excellent location for beginner divers to practice their skills,
as well as a rewarding site for snorkeling.

One of the top destination in Tulamben, the “Drop Off” it’s a nice and deep wall absolutely amazing. Aptly named,
the Drop Off is a vertical underwater cliffside that plunges down over 80 meters. This dramatic natural feature was
formed by the lava flow from the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963.
The Drop Off is great site for divers of all levels to explore. The depth of the dive can be adapted based on your experience.
The site is easily accessible. After entering from the beach, it is just a short swim to reach the wall. The marine life you’ll
see as you descend along the wall is similar to that of the Liberty Wreck. Look closely, and you will find moray eels, mantis shrimp,
octopus, frogfish, and lionfish tucked away in the wall’s many crevices. Tiny pygmy seahorses and longnose hawkfish can also be spotted
hiding among the gorgonian fans.

This dive site is only accessible by boat, it will take us roughly 10 minutes to get to there. Alamanda offers
a beautifully covered coral slope holding a lot of treasures. This is one of the less dived dive sites in Tulamben,
where you can expect to find a lot of macro life with the occasion to also spot Sharks, Bumphead Parrotfish, Napoleon Wrasses and even turtles.
The dive site consists of a steep wall around 25 meters although the reef continues down to over 50 meters with a white sandy bottom.
The wall is covered in sponges and gorgonian fans, usually a great place to spot the tiny pygmy seahorse. Mild to Medium strong currents
typically bring you towards the drop-off. This makes it a great drift diving experience with the boat waiting for you at the end of your dive.

Batu Kelebit is located next to Tulamben bay. About 15mins by jukung (local fishing boat).
Batu Kelebit is a good choice for those who like different variety during a dive.
The spot contains a big range of different structures,no current, big fishes, wonderful corals and amazing macros!
Batu Kelebit is basically two large rocks that lie just offshore. As you follow the sloping reef deeper,
the dive site becomes more dramatic. You’ll see three steep ridges encrusted with a wonderful diversity of hard
and soft corals, table corals, many beautiful sea fans, and sponges.

Emerald Bay is another great dive site we can find in the area of Tulamben. This site can be accessed using a jukung (Local fishing boat).
Emerald features a gradual sloping reef that extends from the coastline out toward the sea. Currents are generally smooth but can become strong.
In this case, you will drift gently towards Tulamben Beach, with the Jukung following your bubbles to pick you up at the end of your dive.
At around 15-25m+ depth, the reef becomes richer with a large number of sponges, including Barrel sponges, many Gorgonian sea fans
(with accompanying Pygmy seahorses – sometimes up to 5-10 per fan) are on this sloping reef. Marine life includes ghostpipefish, octopus,
lionfish and scorpionfish.” and is a good place to spot reef sharks, threshing sharks and eagle rays are (occasionally) seen here.

Just a few kilometers east of Tulamben is a dive site affectionately known as “Seraya Secrets.
Seraya Secrets is one of the best “muck diving” sites in Bali and an excellent spot for macro photography.
True to its name, this dive site is chock full of marine secrets and the sandy slope is teeming with many tiny,
yet rare, critters.
A guide with an “eagle eye” is the secret to finding all of the best critters here.
Common animal encounters include harlequin shrimp, ornate ghost pipefish, pygmy seahorses, occasional seahorse,
leaf fish, and a plethora of nudibranchs.
Seraya Secrets is an absolute paradise for macro lovers. It’s practically impossible to list all the different critters you can see!
On just a single dive, you can expect to see many different species.

Here is another set of great dive sites. The Boga Wreck is approx 10 mins by road, located just off the coast of Kubu,
a village just north of Tulamben. The Boga wreck was sunk in 2011 to form an artificial reef. The Boga Wreck now rests
on a sandy slope about 60 meters off the beach, spanning nearly 45 meters in length.
As a relatively young wreck, the Boga is not yet fully colonized with corals. However, plenty of fish can be seen during
a visit to the site. Barracuda, octopus, surgeonfish, fusilier fish, angelfish, batfish, damselfish, nudibranchs,
and trigger fish are just some of the marine creatures that can be found here.
Because it is located between 18 to 40 meters deep, the Boga Wreck is only recommended for advanced scuba divers.
It does, however, make an ideal location for deep training dives.
